Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is the medical term for an enlarged prostate.  As the prostate enlarges it will gradually squeeze and compress the urethra, totally or partially blocking the urine flow.  Enlargement of the prostate will effect almost all men to some degree.  From birth to puberty the prostate grows from about the size of a pea to the size of a walnut.  During their mid to late 40’s most men experience a second period of prostate growth.  About 50% of men with an enlarged prostate have no symptoms, but it is estimated that approximately 70% of men will have symptoms of prostate enlargement by the age of 60.

Doctors aren’t entirely sure what causes BPH.  It is known that BPH occurs mainly in older men, and that it doesn’t occur in men whose testes were removed before puberty.  For this reason researchers believe that factors related to aging and the testes may spur the development of BPH.

One theory focuses on dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a male hormone which is active in the prostate gland.  It is made when the enzyme 5-alpha reductase converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, which stimulates the growth of the prostate gland.  Research indicates that even when testosterone levels decrease, older men continue to produce and accumulate high levels of DHT in the prostate.  The accumulation of DHT may encourage the growth of cells and contribute to prostate growth.  Scientists have confirmed that men who do not produce DHT do not develop enlarged prostates.

Fortunately there is a natural remedy for prostate problems.  An extract from the saw palmetto berry has been shown to be effective in treating BPH without the side effects associated with medications.  Over the past 2 decades it has gained wide acceptance as a prostate treatment throughout Europe.  Saw Palmetto berries have been shown to reduce prostatic enlargement by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpah reductase.  One study found that men with BPH who used saw palmetto for three months had more than twice the urine flow of men who took a prescription medication.  Both French and German authorities have approved saw palmetto as a treatment for BPH.
